The students visited our class tree last week.  Although we were experiencing unusually mild weather in Baltimore, the tree is still showing signs of winter. The class enjoyed posing in front of the tree this season!

We have been discussing activism in class. What does it mean to be an activist?  In what ways can you be an activist in your community? As a class we reviewed the definition of activism- to make a change that is good, or positive. We then brainstormed ways we could be activists in our communities.  The students thought of several great ideas- take a look!

A native of China, Mrs. Zhang joined 6D on Monday and celebrated the Chinese New Year with the class.  She taught the students that this year- 2012- is the year of the dragon. Each year of the Chinese lunar cycle is represented by a different animal.  She brought in many Chinese books to share, and even showed the students special garmets that her son used to wear when he was young.  Both were

This morning I visited a student playing ice hockey.  He did a fantastic job on the ice!  There's a pretty cool piece to his story- this boy could not ice skate at the start of this season.  Yet, with persistance and hard work, he is now close to scoring his first goal!  INCREDIBLE!

In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday, Calvert School hosted a day of service.  A variety of community projects were offered, including bingo with friends from Gallagher Services.  Fun was had by all! Carol wins bingo and earns her "bingo tiara"!

Students learned how to write the letter H last week!  They traced over the upper and lowercase versions of this letter on index cards with their fingers, before retracing with googly eyes. In preparation for the Sixth Age semester-long geography unit on the continents, I made a large-scale map of South America.  When students from each homeroom visit me, they will learn about this part of the world. I created a flat paper version of South America... ...and cardboard cut outs of each country.   What a fun learning tool!

Calvert Bear had a fabulous time over winter break with this friend! Calvert Bear had fun on the train to New York.  He liked seeing the Rockettes and eating popcorn- he actually sat inside of the popcorn bucket in the theatre!  He liked his dinner at home- he even had to time to play the piano AND he received a personal invitation to watch this student play her violin!

The students spent time with their 5th Grade friends in the middle school this afternoon. The students were visited my Mr. Spahn yesterday.  6D loved Mr. Spahn's "reading voices"- they really added to our understanding and appreciation of the picture books he shared! The 6D students celebrated Thanksgiving and Grandparents' Day last Wednesday afternoon by dressing as Wompanoag Indians in the Pilot/Sixth Age Thanksgiving Play.  After much rehearsing, lines were recited and festive songs were sung.  I am so proud of my students for their hard work! The 6D students adopted and visited a tree on Calvert's campus this past week.  We will visit the tree multiple times throughout the year, documenting its growth and change throughout the four seasons.  Some students noticed that some of the leaves had already begun to change from green to yellow, red, and brown.  Pictures of our tree will be included in our 6th Age journals.

Reading students practiced their listening skills this week with a phonemic awareness activity which took us outside. What is a phoneme, you ask? A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound- and as parents or teachers you are already familiar with the alphabet sounds, most of which have their own phonemes (an example of an exception is C which "steals" sounds from other letters like K and S).

This afternoon I visited Webers Farm- on such a crisp, fall day it was the perfect outing! The mathematicians utilized their sorting skills on Monday by experimenting with objects that float and sink. The students were placed in groups where they collaborated together to place these objects in water, and later record the results. Nice work! A student carefully records her results. 6D has been learning about maps in geography. We discussed that a map is a representaion of a region of the earth. It is also a tool that describes the setting of an environment. My brother-in-law, Derek, is a scientist who travels the world. Although he resides in Baltimore, his current stop is Uganda. My students were curious about this country in Africa, and had the following questions for Derek. We are hopeful he will answer us, and will have time to Skype us this week from South Africa.
