Today 6D began discussing the word ACTIVIST. We defined this word together as a group. Our definition is the following: An activist is someone who finds a need and makes a positive change, a change for the good, a change that helps others.
The students continued their discussion of Dr. King from last month by learning that he was an activist because he helped many people receive equal rights. This was a good change that helped others. This type of change did not happen over night and took awhile.
We then added Dr. King's photo to our "Activist Timeline".
Although he lived long ago, the students will be able to place him in the bigger history of the world through utilization of this timeline format.
After a brief discussion on Dr. King, the students then learned about an organization of activists called the Children's Art Village. Based in Ghana and growing worldwide, this is an organization that promotes artistic expression to children in need. The students watched a video from their website for reference. We then added this group to our timeline.
The students were lastly asked to brainstorm ways they could be activists in their own community.
Throughout the remainder of the year, 6D will learn about many additional activists, and how other teachers, parents, and friends are being activists as well.
